0   Introduction

The “mantra” of the Movilizer technology is “Low Cost”; this technology has been built from the beginning to mobilise any processes at the lowest possible costs. Bearing this in mind, the Movilizer Engineering Team (based in Mannheim, Germany) have designed a system that can be explained in three very simple steps:

1   You send us a simple XML file via secured Web Services and tell us to whom (mobile User) we should deliver it. The XML file (which follows the Movilizer specific structure, “Movilizer Protocol”) contains the business process or form to be mobilised (a sequence of screens with encrypted business data).
2   The Movilizer delivers the XML file to the appropriate mobile User and ensures that whatever mobile device he or she is using, the business process (packaged in a sequence of screens) can be executed.
3   The Movilizer sends you a new XML file (via the same secured Web Service) containing the results of the execution of the business process (the captured data by the mobile User).

To achieve this, the Movilizer counts three main components. As described below in greater detail, the three Movilizer pillars are:

  • The Movilizer Client: it is very small software (some few Kilobytes) written in different native languages (depending on the target device) capable of running on any mobile phone, smart phone or PDA (you can reuse existing phones and/or mobile devices).
  • The Movilizer Cloud: it is a secured multitenant and hosted middleware with 99.99% guaranteed availability that can connect any backend system with any mobile phone by sending and receiving encrypted business data in both directions. Because it is multitenant it allows economies of scale (single infrastructure is leveraged by many tenants). The Movilizer cloud follows the classic principles of Software as a Service (SaaS).
  • The Movilizer Connectors: It is a collection of “out of the box” Connectors available for the most popular standard software packages (SAP, Microsoft, SalesForce.com etc.) that, once installed on your backend system, accelerate the integration of the backend system with the Movilizer Cloud. In the same way you can easily build your own Connector by simply connecting your backend system via a Web Service call with the Movilizer Cloud.

The Movilizer can be used in two different scenarios:

  • “Standalone” scenario: You can use the Movilizer Standalone, meaning without any kind of integration to any backend system. In this scenario you use the Mobile App Admin Portal to design your mobile apps (Movelets) and to receive and view the processed data from the mobile devices (including standard Microsoft Excel download functionality).
  • “Integrated” scenario: Should you wish to integrate the Movilizer with your existing backend system (SAP, Oracle, Microsoft, SalesForce.com etc.) you can download the plug-in Connector from the Mobile App Admin Portal and deploy it to your backend. If the Connector you wish is not available “out of the box”, you can also build your own Connectors.

1   The Movilizer Client

You can run the Movilizer Client on your current mobile phones (not only on smart phones) or on your existing handheld devices (rugged or non rugged PDAs). No new hardware is required. The Movilizer Client runs on any platform (BlackBerry, Symbian, Android, Windows mobile, iPhone) and on any of the following mobile devices: any Nokia, any HTC, any BlackBerry, any Sony Ericsson, Samsung, any Motorola mobile phone or PDA, any Intermec Handheld device etc. The deployment of the Movilizer Client is done via SMS and is as simple as downloading a Ringtone (average set up time is seconds).

The Movilizer Client works offline – online. This means that you do not need connectivity to be able to work with it. The synchronisation can be triggered automatically in the background, or explicitly by the mobile User.

The Movilizer uses the native user interface of your mobile phone or PDA, whatever phone you use. In this way, you can use many of your mobile phone features within the Movilizer: diary, integration with phone book etc.

2   The Movilizer Cloud

For you, as an IT responsible, the Movilizer Cloud means that you do not need to install any additional infrastructure (no middleware) to be able to run the Movilizer. The following components are accessible via the Internet:

2   1   Synchronization Service

The synchronisation service allows you to work synchronously or asynchronously. This provides the Movilizer with the capability of supporting thousands of mobile User synchronisations per second.

2   2   Self Service Portal

You use the Mobile App Admin Portal via the Internet (www.movilizer.com) to:

Maintain the business transactions and design mobile app (only for the standalone scenario)
Via the Mobile App Admin Portal you can design your mobile app and maintain your transactional data which you then send to the mobile Users.

Adapt the mobile screens and flows to fit your needs (only for the standalone scenario)
Via the Mobile App Admin Portal you define how your mobile app will look on the mobile phone. You can adapt the screens according to your needs. For example, you can change the texts of the screens, you can delete screens or you can create new screens (feature available only in the Enterprise version).

Administrate your mobile Users (only for the standalone scenario)
User administration means to create Users (name and mobile phone) and to assign the corresponding data cleaning forms to the mobile Users. In an integrated scenario, you do the mobile User maintenance in your own backend system, passing the User information to the Movilizer Cloud via the Web Service.

Monitor your mobile Users (for both scenarios)
In any case, you need to be able to monitor the scenario. In the Mobile App Admin Portal you can monitor based on User name or phone, or alternatively based on Transaction ID (each processed transaction becomes a unique Transaction ID).

Access and download the completed transaction or captured data (only for the standalone scenario)
In the Mobile App Admin Portal you can access the processed transactions or captured data (filtering by date and mobile device) and download them into Microsoft Excel. In an integrated scenario, this information is automatically sent to your backend system.

Download the available Connectors or create your own Connector (for both scenarios)
In the Mobile App Admin Portal you will find all of the Connectors available for the Movilizer. If none of the available Connectors fit your needs, you can build your own. In the Mobile App Admin Portal you will find a tutorial and supporting documentation explaining how to use the Web Service API to send and receive Work Orders from whatever backend you may use today.

2   3   Web Service

You use the Web Service to connect the Movilizer to any backend system. The Web Service includes APIs for:

  • Sending and assigning data to your mobile Users.
  • Receiving processed and captured data.
  • Monitoring the mobile landscape.

3   The Movilizer Connectors (as Plug-Ins)

To save you implementation and development efforts, the Movilizer comes with predefined Connectors. In the Mobile App Admin Portal you can download all of the available Connectors and find the exact documentation for the installation (via Plug-In concept). Movilizer Connectors always include a generic Connector (that will allow your system to call the Movilizer Web Service) and a business Connector (which contains your scenario business logic).

Should none of the available Connectors match your requirements, you can easily build your own. All that you will need is a backend system capable of doing Web Service calls and the Movilizer Web Service documentation. This documentation explains step by step how to build, test and operate a new Connector (You can find this documentation in the Mobile App Admin Portal).
